i <br />MI_dUTES OF THE ORANGE COIINTY gppX "] ~qGE 25~ <br />BOARD OF COP+II~IISSIOIiERS <br />February 23, 1970 <br />The Board of Commissioners of Orange County met in special session at <br />3 o~clock P.M. on Monday, February 23, 1970, in the District Courtroom at the <br />Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina. <br />Members Present: Chairman Carl M, Smith and Commissioners Harvey D. <br />Bennett, William C. Ray, Henry S. Walker and Ira A, Ward. <br />Members Absent: None <br />The following repreaentativea of the State Highway Commission were prosent: <br />Clifton Benson, Division Highway Commissioner, P. L. Welsh, Division Fkigineer, <br />Earl Hoover, District Engineer, and Bryant Brewer, County Maintenance Supervisor. <br />The meeting was held for the purpose of discussing with the renreaentatives <br />of the State Highway Commission the secondary road plan, which would be instituted <br />in 1970, for Orange County. <br />Discussion ensued relative to the following roads: Acaesa road to Orange <br />High School from N. C, highway 86, access road to Chapel Hill High School from <br />Eatea Drive Extension, Secondary road 1333, which leads into Lake Orange, <br />Secondary road 1179, which is an extension of the Union Grove Church road, the <br />Tack Walker road, the Marvin Evans road and Highway ~ eastward Prom Chapel Hill <br />to Raleigh. The Board of Commissioners stated that in their opinion the above <br />referred roads were of vital importance to Orange County. <br />Mr. Benson advised the Board that the improvements to Highway 51}, eastward <br />from Chapel Hill to Raleigh, held the hir~hest priority rating, as far as he <br />was personally concerned, however, until the designated route for Interstate l.~..D <br />in the Durham area was determined any plena for improving highway 5L{. must be <br />deferred as there is a probability that Highway s!} would be routed into Interstate <br />40. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board said meeting was <br />ad3ovxned. ~ <br />Carl M. Smith and Commissioners William C. Ray, <br />Harvey D. Bennett, Henry S. Walker and Ira A. Ward, j <br />Members Absent: None <br />This meeting was held for the purpose oP conducting a public hearing in <br />- canfunction with the County Planning Board relative to an amendment to the Chapel <br />Hill Township Zoning Ordinance. <br />Chairman Carl Smith called the meeting to order and then turned the chair over j <br />to Charlie Johnston, Chairman of the County Planning Board. Mr. Johnston proceeded ;' <br />`" to conduct the public hearing. <br />The minutes of this public hearing will be duly recorded in the Minute Racket <br />Book of the County Planning Board. <br />At the conclusion of the public hearing Chairman Johnston turned the chair bank <br />to Chairman Carl Smith. <br />
