MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY 7 rrA 201 <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />June 2, 1969 <br />The Board of Commissioners for the County of Orange, North Carolina, met <br />in regular session at the County Courthouse in Hillsborough, the regular place <br />of meetingjat 10,00 A.M., on June 2, 1969. <br />Members Present: Chairman Carl M. Smith, and Commissioners Harvey D. Bennett, <br />William C. Ray, Henry S. Walker and Ira A. Ward. <br />Members Absent: None <br />The minutes of the previous meetings were read by the Clerk and approved <br />by the Board. <br />Ebert Pierce, County Extension Chairman, reported that Cyrus Green had been <br />selected to assist in a statewide eoneest for the grading of feeder calves and <br />that this would mean a ten (10) day absence from county employment. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Walker, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted that Mr. Green be authorized to accept the appointment <br />as a judge in the statewide feeder calf grading contest. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Walker, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted, that Mrs. Jean L. McDade be appointed to replace <br />Mr. Howard Compton on the Orange County Welfare Board. Said term to be immediately <br />effective. Mr. Compton's term will expire on June 30, 1969. Mrs. McDade is <br />then to begin a new term effective as of July 1, 1969 and said term will expire <br />as of June 30, 1972. <br />Commissioner Bennett reviewed the Legislative Bulletin with the Board. <br />Discussion ensued relative to the compromise which had been introduced on Senate <br />Bill No. 178. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Bennett, seconded by Commissioner Ward, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted,that the Orange County Board of Commissioners-go on <br />record as endorsing Senate Bill No. 178 as substituted. <br />The clerk was instructed to inform Orange County's representatives in <br />General Assembly of the action taken by the Board. <br />Chairman Smith advised the Board of the following items which he had received <br />during the previous month: <br />1. Letter from State Highway Commission relative to speed limit on SR #1777•.' <br />2. Copy of report received from Congressman Nick Galifianakis which he had <br />introduced during the 91st Congress. <br />3. Revort from the Chanel Hill - Carrboro Multi-Purpose Center. <br />1}. Letter from the North Carolina Civil Defense Agency relative to the <br />appointment of a Civil Defense Director. <br />5. Copy of letter from B. B. Olive, Attorney, Durham, North Carolina, to <br />D. L. Coburn, Department of Water & Air Resources, Raleigh, North Carolina. <br />6. Letter from N. C. Department of Public Welfare relative to the attendance <br />of certain members at the Jail and Detention Services School. <br />7. Bulletin from the Governor's Committee on Law and Order. <br />8. Memorandum from the Orange County Voters League. <br />9. Letter from Robert Seymour, President of the Inter-Church Council for <br />Social Services relative to the appointment of a Negro to the County <br />Board of Welfare. <br />10. Letter from L. J. Phipps, Chairman Historic Hillsborough Commission, <br />requesting consideration of a $5,000.00 appropriation to the Historic <br />Commission. <br />11. Letter from Alex McMahon advising the Board that all three positions on <br />the Greater Chapel Hill Fire District Commission have expired. <br />12. Letter from C. W. Davis relative to the Resource, Conservation and <br />Development Watershed tour.
