M2 <br />BOOK 6 PACE <br />11, 1967 Minutes continued <br />The County Electrical Inspectors stated that in their opinion the proposed <br />change being offered by Duke Power Company would weaken the present electrical code <br />and that they were opposed to the memorandum. Representatives of the University <br />Service Plant were present and stated that they concurred with the opinions <br />expressed by the County Electrical Inspectors. Further discussion ensued. It was <br />agreed that the Board, at this time, would not alter the County Electrical Code. <br />A road petition for Hucleberry Drive was presented and the Clerk was directed <br />to forward same to the State Highway Commission. <br />Dr. Charles Blake of Hillsborough was present and offered his comments relative <br />to strip mining of marginal deposits of ore. <br />It was decided to delay the awarding of the Health Building contract until a <br />conference could be held with the architect. <br />Commissioner Ray was asked to contact and employ, on an hourly basis, a heavy <br />equipment operator in order that a road to the Lake Orange site might be built. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board said meeting was <br />adjourned to meet again on Tuesday, May 16, 1967 at 2:00 P.M. for the purpose of <br />meeting with representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and on Thursday, May 25, <br />1967 at 11:00 A.M. for the purpose of canvassing the votes of the $3,000,000.00 <br />School Bond election which is being held on Tuesday, May 23, 1967. <br />Harvey D. Gattis, Acting Clerk <br />'------------------------------------------- <br />MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />May 16, 1967 <br />The Board of County Commissioners of Orange County met in regular adjourned <br />session in the Community Room of the Orange Savings & Loan Association Building in <br />Chapel Hill, North Carolina at-2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 16, 1967. <br />Present: Chairman Harvey D. Bennett, Commissioners William C. Rap, Carl M. Smith <br />Ira A. Ward and Henry S. Walker. <br />Absent: None <br />The following persons were present for said meeting: Dr. Virgil Mann,T;U.N.C. <br />Geology Department; Dr. Carlyle Sittsrson, Chancellor U.N.C. at Chapel Hill; Phil <br />Green, Assistant Director, Institute of Government; Harry Palmer and Pearson Stewart, <br />Research Triangle Regional Planning Commission and Rbland McClamroch, Mayor Town of <br />Chapel Hill. <br />This meeting was held in order that Lawrence Shirley, Engineer and Official <br />Representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mineq might present to those present the overall <br />implications of strip mining in an area such as the Durham, Chapel Hill and Research <br />Triangle area. <br />Mr. Shirley stated that open pit mining might be compatable with the basic charac <br />of this area, with the exception of property owned by Duke Forest, and that he felt su <br />open pit and/or strip mining would not blend well' with the designated purpose for whic <br />Duke Forest was established. Mr. Shirley advised that rules and regulations should be <br />formulated prior to the advent of any mining operations as these rules would significa <br />effect the profitability of any proposed mining operation and would thus be a major <br />factor in the companies determining whether or not mining operations would be undertake <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Smith, it was moved and adopted, that the Board of <br />Commissioners inform the press of its complete endorsement of the $3,000,000.00 <br />School Building Bond election which was being held on Tuesday, May 23, 1967. <br />There come Board in the said <br />courtroom owas <br />r the <br />purpose of canvassing the votes of the $3,000,000.00 School Bond election which is <br />being held on Tuesday, May 23,.1967. <br />3etty June Hayes, Clerk <br />3.
