44.3 <br />MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />May 2, 1966 <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, <br />May 2, 1966, at ten o'clock A.M. in the Commissioners Room at the courthouse n <br />Hillsborough, N. C. <br />Members present: Chairman Harvey D. Bennett, Commissioners Gordon B. <br />Cleveland, William C.Ray, Henry S. walker and Carl M. Smith. <br />Members absent: None <br />The minutes of the meetings held on April 4th, April 14th, April 25th, and <br />April 26th, were read and approved. <br />The following road petitions were received and the Clerk was directed to <br />forward them to the State Highway Commission. <br />1. County road #1941 - for paving - presented by Forrest T. Heath. <br />2. County road #1958 - for widening and straightening - presented by Donald <br />M. Stanford. <br />3. Camp Ground Road - for addition to the State System - presented by <br />Albert Reaves. <br />4. Wilkins Drive (SR #1803) - for addition to the State System. <br />5. County Road #1338 - for paving - presented by John L. Efland, Jr. <br />6. Reverie Road - for addition to the State System - presented by Ruth Latta. <br />Chairman Bennett presented two letters from R. B. Todd, Town Clerk for the <br />Town of Carrboro. Said letters advised the Board that the term of T. W. Goodrich <br />on the Carrboro Planning Board expires on April 181 1966, and that the term of <br />Jesse Basnight on the Carrboro Adjustment Board expires April 18, 1966. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Smith, seconded by Commissioner Cleveland, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted that J. S. Wearn of North Greensboro Street, Carrboro, <br />North Carolina, be appointed to serve a three (3) year term on the Carrboro <br />Planning Board. Said term effective upon the expiration of the term of T. W. <br />Goodrich. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Smith, seconded by Commissioner Cleveland, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted that Jesse Basnight be re-appointed to the Carrboro <br />r with <br />Adjustment Board for a term of three (3) years. Said term to <br />his present term. <br />Marvin Walker, Mayor of the Town of Mebane, and A. A. Bradley, Fire <br />Commissioner for the Town of Mebane, appeared before the Board. They stated that <br />the Mebane Volunteer Fire Department was the only fire department rendering <br />service to the western Orange County area and that last year their department made <br />approximately thirty-seven (37) calls in this area. They stated further that their <br />department received no financial contribution or assistance from any source in <br />Orange County for this service, but that Alamance County contributed $75.00 per <br />month for fire protection service to the unincorporated area in Alamance County <br />which surrounded the Mebane area. Mayor Walker requested that the Orange County <br />Board of Commissioners consider in their 1966-1967 budget making a contribution <br />in order to help defray the expenses incurred by the Mebane fire department in <br />rendering fire protection service to the stated areas. No action was taken... <br />Chairman Bennett presented a letter from Dr. W. B. Saunders of 606 Coolidge <br />Street in Chapel Hill. Said letter expressed concern for an area located just <br />below his home which was being used as a dumping ground for trash. The Board of <br />Commissioners talked with the District Health Department and were assured that the <br />Health Department was aware of the situation and they were taking steps to see that . <br />same was corrected. <br />Chairman Bennett presented a letter from Mary Esser, Secretary of The Citizens' <br />Committee of the Chapel Hill Schools. Said letter recommended that federal funds <br />made available to the Chapel Hill City Schools should in no way affect increased <br />support from the county for the'Chapel Hill Schools. <br />.The following Blind Aid Cases were approved. <br />AID TO THE BLIND AGENDA <br />May 2, 1966 <br />Revision <br />Name Eff.
