Minutes of the Board of County Commissioners 40 3 <br />July 6, 1965 <br />The Orange County Hoard of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, July 6, 1965, <br />at 10:00 o'clock A.M., in the Commissioners Room in the Courthouse in Hillsborough, N. C. <br />?Members present: Chairman Harvey D. Bennett, Commissioners Gordon B. Cleveland, William C. <br />Say, Henry S. Walker and Carl M. Smith. <br />Members absent: None. <br />Allen H. Walker, Sr. was present and after some explanation requested that the Board consider <br />issuing to Walker's Funeral Home an exclusive franchise to operate ambulance service in Orange County. <br />This matter was referred to the County Attorney for consideration. <br />Monthly reports were received from S. M, Lynch, Clerk of Court, Walter Wrenn, Veterans Service <br />Officer, and James Wight, Welfare Director. <br />The following blind Aid Grants were approved: <br />AID TO T-HE BLIND AGENDA <br />July 6, 1965 <br />Name Eff. Wight advised the Board that he had submitted to the VTelfare Board his resignation to be <br />effective September 1, 1965. Mr. Wight is leaving to accept a teaching position at the University of <br />North Carolina. <br />Chairman Bennett, speaking on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, expressed deep regret <br />upon learning of Mr. Wight's resignation and paid tribute to the excellent leadership and service <br />rendered by Mr. Wight in his department. <br />Road petition for paving Tinkerbell Road in Colony Woods was approved, and the Clerk was <br />directed to forward it to the State Highway Commission. <br />A petition for the creation of a fire district in the Colony Woods area was received and re- <br />ferred to the County Attorney for his approval. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Cleveland, the following motion was <br />unanimously adopted: That the Morris Telephone Company, in view of its recent rate increases, give to <br />its subscribers direct call service to Durham. The intent and purpose of this resolution is to tie <br />the local area phone system into the Durham system without having to go through a long distance <br />operator. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Smith, it was unanimously adopted <br />that the county apply to the proper state agency for permission to enter the food stamp plan in lieu <br />of the present commodity distribution program we are now using. . <br />The remainder of the day was devoted to a discussion of the proposed 1965-1966 budget. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned to meet <br />again at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July* 7, 1965, to continue budget discussions. <br />Harvey D.
