MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF.OOUNTY CC*ZSSIONERS <br />April 9, 1963 <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, April 9, 1963, at eight o'clock p.m. <br />in the Commissioners room at the courthouse in Hillsboro, N. C. <br />Members present: Chairman Donald Stanford, Commissioners Harvey D. Bennett, Gordon Cleveland, <br />Carl M. Smith and Henry Walker. <br />Members absent: None <br />The Chairman read the following letter addressed to the Board from G. P. Carr, Superintendent, <br />Orange County Schools: (April 5, 1963) <br />We received from Miss Betty June Hayes under date of March <br />20, 1963, a letter requesting that we give you our opinion <br />relative to combining the school units of Orange County. <br />At the meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, April 1, <br />the board considered this question briefly. No board action <br />was taken but the opinion expressed generally was that it <br />would be a fine thing if we could combine the two units but <br />that there are many obstacles to be overcome. The board <br />did not spell out the difficulties which would be entailed. <br />The principle purpose of this meeting was to name members of the Carrboro Planning Board and <br />the Carrboro Board of Adjustments. Several persons were proposed for membership on each board, After <br />some discussion of the.proposed names, the following persons were nominated to the Carrboro Planning <br />Board; <br />Upon nomination by Commissioner Smith, seconded by Commissioner Bennett, Tom Goodrich was <br />nominated for a term of 3 years. <br />Upon nomination of Commissioner Bennett, seconded by Commissioner Smith, Don Lowe was'nominated <br />for a term of 2 years. <br />Chairman Stanford called for a vote, and both men were unanimously elected. <br />The following persons were nominated for membership on the Carrboro Board of Adjustme nts: <br />Upon nomination of Commissioner Bennett, seconded by Commissioner Smith, Jessie Basnight was <br />nominated for a term of 3 years. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Smith, seconded by Commissioner Bennett, Aubrey Howard was <br />nominated for a term of 2 years. <br />Chairman Stanford called for a bote, and both men were unanimously, elected. <br />The Board discussed briefly the proposed State School Board issues. The Board supported the <br />proposed $100 million school bond issue, to be distributed on a per student basis, and requested <br />the County Accountant to advise our legislator of this fact. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned. <br />Donald Stanford <br />Chairman <br />S.
