1 <br /> APPROVED 3/10/2020 <br /> MINUTES <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> BUSINESS MEETING <br /> February 4, 2020 <br /> 7:00 p.m. <br /> The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in a Business Meeting on Tuesday, <br /> February 4, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at the Whitted Human Services Center in Hillsborough, N.C. <br /> COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Penny Rich and Commissioners Jamezetta <br /> Bedford, Mark Dorosin, Earl McKee, Mark Marcoplos, and Renee Price <br /> COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Greene <br /> COUNTY ATTORNEYS PRESENT: John Roberts <br /> COUNTY STAFF PRESENT: County Manager Bonnie Hammersley, Deputy County Manager <br /> Travis Myren, and Clerk to the Board Donna Baker (All other staff members will be identified <br /> appropriately below.) <br /> Chair Rich called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. <br /> 1. Additions or Changes to the Agenda <br /> Chair Rich noted the following item at the Commissioners' places: <br /> - PowerPoint for Item 5-a <br /> PUBLIC CHARGE <br /> The Chair acknowledged the public charge. <br /> Arts Moment <br /> Dan Mayer, Orange County Arts Commission Member, introduced Nancy Peacock: <br /> Nancy Peacock, served as Piedmont Laureate in 2018, and is the author of the novels <br /> Life Without Water (chosen as a New York Times Notable Book), Home Across the Road, and <br /> The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson, winner of Shelf Unbound Best Self Published Novel, <br /> and Writer's Digest Best Self-Published Book in Mainstream Fiction, later traditionally published <br /> by Atria Press. She is also the author of the memoir and "writing-in-the-real-world" guide A <br /> Broom of One's Own: Words on Writing, Housecleaning and Life, which chronicles the many <br /> years she spent dusting her own books as she earned a living cleaning houses, and what she <br /> learned about writing from that humbling experience. Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, says of A <br /> Broom of One's Own, "Each essay is an engaging, well-written, funny and poignant journey into <br /> Nancy Peacock's generous spirit, humble heart and incisive mind." Nancy runs writing groups <br /> for women and for 16 years has facilitated a popular, free Prompt Writing Workshop, now held <br /> at Flyleaf Books the second Saturday of every month. <br /> Nancy Peacock read a piece called, "Cookies". <br /> 2.
