' -1`34 <br />Minutes of the Hoard of County Commissioners ' <br />February 2, 1959 <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in r_gular session on 17onday, Eebruar,/ 2, 1959, <br />at ten o'clock a.m, in the Commissioners' room at the courthouse in Hillsboro, N. C. <br />Members present: Chairman R. J, ;d. Hobbs, Corvnissioners Clarence Janes, Donald McDade, <br />Donald Stanford and Henry 4lalker, <br />Members absent: none <br />Minutes were read and approved with the exception of the Jan. 13th meeting, The Clerk was <br />instructed to make some changes in the wording concerning the source from which the names were ' <br />taken to make up the Co:missioners' School Advisory Convnittee. <br />H, G, Coleman, Sr. mazle a request on behalf of Sarah Laws Lancaster concerning the old <br />desk which was used by her Tether and which is now situ¢ted in the oTfice of the Veteran's <br />Service Officer. Mrs. Lancaster's request was that the County give to her the old desk since it <br />vas no longer in use. The Board. agreed to take the matter under advisement. <br />Don S, Matheson, County F¢rm Agent, requested a leave of absence from the County for the <br />period beginning April 15th thrv June 2nd. Permission xas granted authorizing annual leave in <br />accordance xith the policy of the 1J. C. State College Extension Service, Upon motion of <br />Commissioner Stanford, seconded by Commissioner McDade, and unanimously adopted; I-0r. Matheson <br />was granted an additional seven (7) day leave without nay, in addition t.o his accumulated leave. <br />The following road petitions xere received and the Clerk was requested to fo[ward same on <br />to the State Highway Commission. ' <br />Road located in Chanel Hill Twp, known as University Heights Road, <br />Road located 1o Little River TwP runs from Little River Chureh by Berry's Grove Church <br />on to the I~. W. Clayton hem=. Said road is known ¢s a neighbourhood road, <br />load located in Chanel Hill P:m. runs from Orange Grove Highway to Phillips Russell's stock <br />farm and is known as Old Garrett Road. <br />Upon motion oT Commissioner :9alker, seconded by Commissioner Jones, and unanimously adooted; <br />the County Accountant was authorized to invest the 315,025.20 due to the H, B. 741tche1l Construction <br />Company in Building and Loan Associations until the settlement oT the pending suit filed by J. C, <br />;•lLnters. These funds are due the H, E. 1•litchell Construction Company for xork completed on the <br />Central High School building. <br />She follrn+ing Department Officials presented reports for the month of January, 1959, <br />Hatherine Pritchard, Asst. Lynch, Clerk of Court <br />Jane Parker, :ieL^are Supt. and the Sheriff's of ace. <br />The Hoard decided to request Representative Umstead and Senator Lanier to invest the <br />possibilities of getting the State to assume it's zi~htful responsibility of supplying adequate <br />assistance to the District Solicitor. <br />Upon motion of Comnissiener Walker, seconded by Commissioner Stanford, and unanimously adopted; <br />the County Accountant xas authorized to affiliate Orange County with the North Carolina Conmissioners <br />Asspciation by paying the requested membership fee of 3172.18. <br />John H. Cate, of Rt, 1, Chapel N111, requested permission to use poison to help rid his area <br />of foxes, This matter was referred to the County Attorney for his ruling on the use oT poison. <br />A committee from the Chanel Hill-Carrboro ;lerchant Association and the Hillsboro Merchant <br />Association aope¢red. L, J. Phipps spoke in behalf of this group and requested that the present <br />policy pT assessing inventory at 100$ of its acquired cost less mark drnm be changed and that from <br />Jan, 1, 1959, and thereafter all such inventories be assessed at 70$ of acquired cost less mazk <br />dmwn. The Hoard took no action on this request but retained the request for further study. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner McDade, seconded by Commissioner [talker, and unanimously adooted; <br />the County Accountant was authorized to have acousital file out in the Commissioners Room, The <br />bill for said title is to be taken from the Bmezgency Fund. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner 14a1ker, seconded by Commissioner Stanford, and unanimously adopted; <br />a refund of $61.76 1s to be made to Robert ?, tCixby of-Cedar Grove Township because of clerical <br />error in his property record card. <br />The following names xere drawn to serve as ,jurors for the Feb. 23rd Perm of Ceiminal Court, <br />1, John Cate, C,H, ll, 4!.
