The topic for 2007 was
"Domestic Violence Hurts the Whole Community".
The format for Forum 2007 included a keynote address from District Court Judge Beverly
Scarlett, panel discussions featuring domestic violence survivors and a domestic violence
prevention/intervention service provider, Lunch Table Discussion Groups, and a call to action
from poet-activist Jaki Shelton Green.
Attached is a copy of the Final Report that depicts the activities and outcomes of the day.
Copies will be forwarded to all presenters, participants, and interested partners. The Final
Report is the work product of graduate student interns from UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina
Central University in Durham expressly retained by HSAC for this purpose. At its meeting on
February 18, the Final Report was approved by HSAC and recommended for presentation by
the Chair at the first BOCC meeting in March.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact with receipt of this report as information.
The BOCC did grant approval to reserve registration proceeds (in the amount of $1200) to be
used to help seed a project from a local nonprofit as an outgrowth of Forum 2007. HSAC will be
reviewing submittals and making a recommendation to the BOCC as part of the annual outside
agency application process later this spring.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board accept the Report from
the Human Services Advisory Commission on Forum 2007.
