VA <br /> RESOLUTION <br /> INTERNATIONAL DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE <br /> WHEREAS, April 4 is the anniversary of the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., <br /> the great world leader and the best known American to use active nonviolence to <br /> oppose oppression, and <br /> WHEREAS, violence of all kinds - between family members, in schools, on the <br /> streets, at businesses - is causing major disruptions in the social fabric leading, <br /> to fear and distrust, and <br /> WHEREAS, violence in other nations whether terrorist or armed conflict is <br /> causing widespread loss of life and destruction of property and is directly <br /> involving American armed forces and civilians, and <br /> WHEREAS Orange County has taken a leadership role in North Carolina in its <br /> efforts to curb violence, establishing conflict resolution and many other efforts to <br /> resolve conflicts and maintain a civil and compassionate community, <br /> THEREFORE, the Orange.County Board of County Commissioners joins other <br /> communities throughout the United States and other nations in declaring April 4, <br /> 1996 as a "Day without Violence" and calls on the citizens of the county to <br /> redouble efforts, in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other great <br /> spiritual and political leaders devoted to nonviolence, to remove the causes of <br /> violence in our community and seek ways to join others in our state and nation to <br /> restore civility to our families, relationships and communities. <br /> Moses Carey, Jr., Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Co is loners <br />
