Davis <br />The me sting tvas called to order by 1.tr. Cobb. Mr. Emory, Chairman, Chapel <br />Hill Board of Trus tea s, stated that the purpose of the meeting was to present <br />the recamnendations of the Chapel Hill Board concerning the bids on the Nam <br />17egro School and aslcad Ltr. Gobbel to make the report. He reviewed the bids <br />made June 20, 19$0 and stated that the totel amount needed to construct the <br />building as planned was about 590,000.CO in excess of the $235,000.00 avail- <br />able. He further stated that his board hoped very much that the building could <br />ba constructed as pia reed and recommended that additional funds be made avail- <br />able to do the job, but since this was not possible at present the following <br />recommendation is made to the Orange County Hoard of Education end the County <br />Board of Commissioners: <br />The Chanel Hi11 Board of Trustees recommends that since the to tel <br />bids ors in excess of the 1Yinds aveilable to construct the Nevr Negro <br />High School for the Southern part of Orange County and since alternate <br />bids were requested that the auditoriumm, gymnasium and such other <br />alternates specified in the bide be left out as are necessary to bring <br />the cost of cons traction to $235,000.00; that these features left <br />out nosy be constructed just es soon as funds become avalleble. <br />Rev. J. ft. ttanley, Hubert Robinson, Kanne th Jones, end Dr. C. t"!. Thompson <br />III, ell spoke for the Negro population of Chanel Hill, eech e;.pressiag the <br />people w¢nted the "whole elan novr as manned" - even exnr essing the feeling tha~ <br />the Auditorium-gymnas ivm was preferred to classrooms. They were informed that <br />the State Board of Educat ion had established the following priority on use of <br />State monies for schoolhouse construction: 1. Cle ssroome, 2. Sari tery facili~ <br />ties, 3. Lunchrooms, 4. Auditoriums, $. Gymnasiums. After further dis cusp <br />sion by venous persons present, the following motion rras made by ..tr. Stanford: <br />That the Orange County Board of Education eccept the recommendation <br />of the Chanel Hill Board of Trustees. <br />This motion wes duly seconded by htr. Burton. The vote was as follows: <br />Ayes: 3 <br />Noes: 0 <br />The motion was dmy passed and pre ssnted to the Orange County Hoard of Commis- <br />sioners. <br />The Board of Commissioners aporoved the recosmendation of the Chapel Hill <br />Board of Trus tees> sad the Board oT Education, that the auditorium & gymnasium <br />be deleted. <br />The Board of Commissioners also awarded the contract £or the 1950 Ford, <br />Tudor, V-B, Custom Sedan, 110 horse-power motor, equipoed with seat cov ere, <br />spot light and heetar, to Strowd 1AOtor Comneny> Chapel Hill, N. C., at s price <br />of 56$$,00, plus the 1948 Chevrolet used bg the Sheriff's Department. <br />~~ <br />
