3,34 <br />Minutes of the Board of Commissioners <br />Monday, February 6, 1950 <br />The Board of Commissioners for the County of Orange met in regular session <br />on February 6, 1950, at 10 o'clock A. M., at the Courthouse in Hillsboro, the <br />usual place of meeting. Present: Collier Cobb, Jr., Chairman, Ben F. Wilson <br />and H. G. Laws, Commissioners. <br />The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. ^I <br />Mr. Elijah Ward presented a petition asking that a new road be built from -"-" <br />Cheeks Crossing Road to High Rock Road, a distance of two miles. <br />Mr. R. C. Minnis, Jr., presented a road petition asking that the State HSg'. <br />& Public Works Commission take over and maintain a road running East from <br />Boundary Street in the Town of Hillsboro to Ruffin Street and known as <br />n Street Extension; also a street running South from Orange Street to Queen <br />at Extension and known as Mitchell Street. <br />A road petition was presented asking for a road in Bingham Township, run - <br />from Antioch Church Road to Jones Ferry Road, a distance of 2.15 miles. <br />Mr. S. C. Hughes presented a petition for a road running from Widow Brown' <br />go, on Cedar Grave - Eland Road to Babe Torian's Homeplace, on Cedar Grove - <br />ony Road, a distance of three miles. <br />No action was taken on any of the above requests. <br />Mrs. Jean M. Hear, Superintendent of Public Welfare appeared and requested <br />following changes in Aid to Blind Grants: <br />Annie Vincent of West Hillsboro ,$$15.00 per month. <br />Fredward and Edward Woods increased from $12.00 to $15.00 per month. <br />Bart Alexander Wilson decreased from $27.00 to $25.00 per month. - <br />Now therefore, upon motion of Commissioner Laws, duly seconded by Commis. - <br />er Wilson, the foregoing Aid to Blind Grants were approved as requested. <br />A delegation from Cedar Grove Township, with Mr. L. J. Phipps as spokesman, <br />appeared in connection with the proposed hardsurfacing of a road leading from <br />the Person County line near Laws' Store to Highway No. 86, near G. M. Long's <br />Store. JI <br />It was made to appear to the Board that the crossing at the intersection �. <br />of Highways U. S. 70 and State 86 ,just North from the Town of Hillsboro was <br />very dangerous due to the heavy traffic and the location of the crossing and <br />that the present warning signs of the said crossing were not sufficient. After <br />full discussion, upon motion duly made and seconded, the following resolution <br />was unanimously adopted: <br />RESOLVED, That the Board of Commissioners of Orange County <br />do hereby respectfully request and petition the North Carolina <br />State Highway & Public Works Commission to erect and maintain <br />adequate safety markers at and near the intersection of Highways <br />U. 9. 70 and State 86. <br />It visa then brought to the attention of the Board that a school building <br />for colored children would be constructed in the near future near the Merritt <br />Mill Road Southwest from the Town of Chanel Hill and that the said Merritt Mill <br />Road in its present condition would not be adequate. After discussion, upon <br />motion duly made and seconded, the following resolution was adopted: <br />RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Orange County <br />does hereby respectfully request and petition the North Carolina <br />State Highway & Public Works Commission to widen, straighten and <br />stabalize the Merritt Mill Road from Franklin Street in the Town <br />of Chapel Hill to the hard- surfaced road now under construction <br />leading from the Town of Carrboro to Highway No. 15 and 501. <br />The following names were drawn to <br />serve <br />as Jurors at the March Term of <br />Superior <br />Court: <br />1. <br />Mrs. Alice McKnight (CH) <br />19. <br />C.
