Minutes of the Board of Commissioners <br />Friday, May 20, 1949 <br />The Board met at the usual hour in the Commissioners' Room at the <br />Courthouse, with all members present. <br />This was a special meeting held for the purpose of considering some <br />important matters. <br />On motion of Commissioner Laws, seconded by Commissioner Wilson, the <br />following resolution was unanimously adopted: <br />THAT WHEREAS, Orange County has had an all time Service Officer <br />for the purpose of aiding veterans and their dependents in preparing proper <br />claims for benefits justly due by the federal government; and <br />WHEREAS, said service has proved of much public benefit, and es- <br />pecially to veterans and their families: <br />NON, THEREFORE, it is hereby ordered that an appropriation be in- <br />cluded in the budget for the fiscal year beginning July i, 1949 and ending <br />June 30, 1950, as follows: <br />To Service Officer Salary $2100.00 <br />Travel Allowance 200.00 <br />Office Supplies and equipment 200.00 <br />Total $$2500.00 <br />On motion of Commissioner Nilson, duly seconded by Commissioner Laws, <br />the following resolution was unanimously adopted: <br />THAT WHEREAS, T. A. Burton has served as Division Engineer with the <br />State Highway & Public Works Commission for the territory comprising the Fifth <br />Highway Division for the past twelve years; and <br />WHEREAS, during this period of service Mr. Burton has rendered most <br />efficient and satisfactory service, and has shown an earnest desire to co- <br />operate with the Board of County Commissioners relative to all road matters <br />in Orange County; and <br />WHE.92AS, Mr. Burton has given many years to travelling over not only <br />the primary roads, but the secondary roads of this Division of the State, and <br />is thoroughly familiar with all of the road mileage included within the Fifth <br />Division, and is thereby better aualified to continue rendering satisfactory <br />service than an engineer who is not personally familiar with the many problems <br />arising in said Fifth Division. <br />NOP /, THEREFORE, it is the earnest hose of the members of the Board <br />of Commissioners of Orange County that Mr. T. A. Burton be retained as Divi- <br />sion Engineer in order that the Board of Commissioners of Orange County may <br />continue to receive efficient, satisfactory and cooperative service on the <br />part of the highway organization so far as same affects the road problems of <br />said county. <br />That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to James A. Barnwell, <br />Member of the State Highway & Public 7forks Commission for the Fifth Division, <br />at Burlington, North Carolina, and one to Governor W. Kerr Scott, at Raleigh, <br />North Carolina. <br />There being no further business, upon motion, adjourned. <br />J. E.
