,304 <br />Minutes of the Board of Commissioners <br />Monday, May 2, 1949 <br />The Board met at the usual hour in the Commissioners 'Room at the Court- <br />house. Present: Collier Cobb, Jr., Chairman, Ben F. Wilson and H. G. Laws, <br />Commissioners. <br />The minutes of the April meetings were read and approved. j <br />Mr. Don S. Matheson and E. H. Barnes appeared and made a splendid report —� <br />on the work being done through their office.Mr. Barnes reported that Orange <br />County 4H Club boys and girls won several ton honors for showing best five <br />hogs, best baby beef and best steers at the Fat Stock Show held in Durham <br />recently. <br />Mir. Sydney Green reported on the Library and asked that the library <br />appropriation for 1949 -1950 be raised from 0800.00 to 01000.00. <br />Miss Virginia Cathay, Assistant Home Demonstration Agent appeared and <br />made a very fine report on the different programs sponsored by the Home <br />Demonstration Department, she also reported that fIf ty one Orange County <br />women attended the District Meeting held at Slier City, N. C. <br />The following road petitions were upon motion approved and ordered sent <br />to the State Highway and Public Works Commission for their consideration: <br />Road in Cheeks Township running from Lebanon <br />Road at mail box of Mrs. V. J. Abee to High - <br />Rock Road, and is known as Community Road, <br />length of road about 2 1/2 miles. <br />Wyrick Street and Barclay Road, of the <br />Elkin Hill community, outside of Chapel Hill. _ <br />The Board of Welfare met with the Board and discussed the welfare budget <br />for 1949 -1950. They asked that the county appropriate for the next fiscal <br />P,740.00. <br />for Old Age Assistance all, 812.50, snd for Aid to Dependent Children <br />$7,740.00. <br />Now, therefore, upon motion of Commissioner 'Nilson, seconded by Commis- <br />sioner Laws the foregoing amounts were tentatively approved for OAA and ADC. <br />An increase of grant to Bertha.Nsville from x'31.00 per month to $32.00 per <br />month was approved. _. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Wilson, seconded by Commissioner Laws the <br />following bills were approved and ordered paid: <br />Bill of Gertrude Hogan for 7 hens and 3 ducks <br />killed by dogs $8.00 <br />Bill of J. W. Bennett for one young calf killed <br />by dogs $3.00. , <br />It was brought to the attention of the Board that Sheriff S. T. Latta <br />had authorized work done to the plumbing system at the jail to the amount <br />of $1,367.191 and that there was insufficient funds in the jail budget to <br />pay this bill. <br />Now therefore, upon motion of Commissioner Wilson, duly seconded by <br />Commissioner Laws, the County Accountant is hereby authorized to pay the <br />bill from the General Fund, distributed as follows: from the appropriation <br />for Board of Elections 0600.00, from appropriations of County Commissioners <br />0300.00, from appropriations for tax listing $138.67. <br />Upon motion made by Commissioner Laws and duly seconded by Commissioner <br />Wilson, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: <br />Resolved: That the liability under Surety Bond of Ire A. Ward, County <br />Accountant, same being Aetna Casualty and Surety Company Bond number <br />58 S 13670, be reduced to 0$000.00, as of April 1, l9li.9 and that Collier <br />Cobb, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, be and he is hereby <br />authorized to execute the necessary rider with the Aetna Casualty and Surety <br />Company to accomplish the Purpose. <br />^f <br />
