APPROVED 811 612 0 0 5 <br />MINUTES <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />REGULAR MEETING <br />MAY 17, 2005 <br />7:30 p.m. <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 <br />at 7:30 p.m. at the Southern Human Services Center, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. <br />COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Moses Carey, and Commissioners <br />Valerie P. Foushee, Alice M. Gordon, Stephen Halkiatis and Barry Jacobs <br />COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: <br />COUNTY ATTORNEYS PRESENT: Geoffrey Gledhill and S. Sean Borhanian <br />COUNTY STAFF PRESENT: County Manager John M. Link, Jr., Assistant County <br />Managers Rod Visser and Gwen Harvey and Clerk to the Board Donna S. ALL RECORDINGS OF THE MEETING <br />Chair Carey asked for a moment of silence for tNayne Davis, who lost two members of <br />his family in a frre and his wife was badly burned. Mr. Davis is a County employee. <br />1. Additions or Changes to the Agenda <br />Commissioner Jacobs pointed out that the pink sheet goes with item 7-a. <br />PUBLIC CHARGE <br />The Chair dispensed with the reading of the public charge. <br />2. Public Comments <br />a. Matters not on the Printed Agenda <br />David Rippertan is a resident of Chapel Hill and was representing Orange County <br />Special Olympics. He asked for the County Commissioners' support for $18,000 in order to <br />make the Special Olympics Coordinator position full time. The position is currently in the <br />Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department. <br />Chair Carey said that he received a letter from the Mayor of Chapel Hill making this <br />same request. The County Commissioners responded back to the Mayor that they think this is <br />an important activity and that this is a great opportunity for the Town and the County to work <br />together to make Orange County the best Special Olympics County in the State. They also <br />requested that the staffs work together to develop a plan to help implement the Special <br />Olympics. <br />John Link said that Orange County wants to offer staff resources instead of a direct <br />appropriation of funding. <br />
