ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />PROCLAMATION <br />OLDER AMERICANS MONTH -MAY 2009 <br />WHEREAS, according to the latest population figures, there are more than <br />18,000 persons over 60 years of age in Orange County in 2009; and <br />WHEREAS, the over 60 age group is the fastest growing population sector in <br />Orange County and is projected to grow to over 28,000 older adults by 2020 and <br />double to over 36,000 older adults in 2030; and <br />WHEREAS, the increasing number of aging boomers reaching traditional <br />retirement age highlights the need for increased support of older adults; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of Orange County and all public and private <br />entities to work collaboratively to address older adults' unique health and long- <br />term care challenges; and <br />WHEREAS, older adults are valuable members of our society who enhance our <br />communities and personal lives; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County is proud of the older adults who live here and <br />wishes to show appreciation for what they contribute to their County, State and <br />Nation; and <br />WHEREAS, the theme for Older Americans Month is "Living Today for a Better <br />Tomorrow"; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, join <br />the Governor of North Carolina and the President of the United States in <br />proclaiming May 2009 as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH and further encourage <br />all residents to join us in honoring our older Americans. <br />This the 5th day of May, 2009. <br />~,. <br />Valerie P.
