9 <br /> WHEREAS, more than 1,710 jobs in Orange County were directly attributable to travel and <br /> tourism; and <br /> WHEREAS, travel generated a $26.32 million payroll in 2003; and <br /> WHEREAS, our area attractions, welcome centers and tours hosted more than 1.26 million <br /> visitors in 2004; and <br /> WHEREAS, as people throughout the town, state, country and world become more aware of <br /> the outstanding cultural, historical, and recreational resources available in Orange County, and <br /> travel and tourism will become an increasingly important aspect in the lives of our residents; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, given these laudable contributions to the economic, social, and cultural well being <br /> of the residents of Orange County, it is fitting that we recognize the efforts of the Chapel <br /> Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau and the importance of travel and tourism; <br /> NOW THEREFORE, WE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim May <br /> 7— 15, 2005 as SEE AMERICA WEEK/NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK in Orange County, and <br /> we recognize that Tourism Works in Orange County. <br /> This the 3rd day of May 2005. <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> c. Older Americans Month and Senior Center Week <br /> The Board considered joining federal and state governments in designating the month <br /> of May as Older Americans Month, a time to honor older residents for their contributions to <br /> society; and also to designate the week of May 8 through May 14 as Senior Center Week in <br /> Orange County to recognize local senior centers as focal points for providing opportunities and <br /> services to older citizens and authorizing the Chair to sign the proclamations. <br /> Department on Aging Director Jerry Passmore recognized some representatives from <br /> the Senior Centers— Roy Brock, President of the Chapel Hill Senior Center; Thelma Perkins, <br /> Vice-President of the Chapel Hill Senior Center Friends; Helen Miller, President of the Friends <br /> for Central Orange Senior Center; and Carroll Hawkins, a board member from the Central <br /> Orange,Senior Center. He said that these volunteers make the senior centers community <br /> centers instead of government centers. <br /> Roy Brock thanked the County Commissioners for what they do for senior centers and <br /> they appreciate the centers and look forward to moving into the new center. <br /> Helen Miller invited the County Commissioners to their annual meeting on May 16th at <br /> 10:00 a.m. at the Central Orange Senior Center at Meadowlands. <br /> Thelma Perkins invited the County Commissioners to the Chapel Hill Senior Center <br /> annual meeting on Monday, May 9th at 2:30 p.m. There is also a jazz concert on May 15tH <br /> Commissioner Halkiotis read the Older Americans Month proclamation. <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Gordon to <br /> join federal and state governments in designating the month of May as Older Americans Month, <br /> a time to honor older residents for their contributions to society; and authorize the Chair to sign <br /> the proclamation. <br /> PROCLAMATION <br />
