a~:~~ . 7 PACE 350
$urch Compton, Commander oP the Orange County Reacua Squad, introduced the
Executive Committee oP the Seuad to the Board. xe stated that they would like
to review with the Board a report of the operations of the squad Por the last
year.
Gordon Liner, Squad Captain, presented the Pollowing report Por the calendar
year 1970: 849 calla totaling 3,831x, man hours and the calls were broken down
in the fallowing manner: Automobile Wrecks 100, Emergency Calls 427, Transportation
Calls 171, Miscellaneous Ca11s 137 and False Calls 14.
Lindsay Efland, Squad Lieutenant, in charge of the Ffland unit reported on
the souads financial oondition.
1969 1970
Beginning Cash Balance $ 27 .00 $ 2,771.00
Income during year 14,515.00 27,618.oD
ESCpensea during year 12,017.00 26,901.00
Ending $alance 2,771.00 8,488,00
Mr. Efland reported the greater part ($13,500) of the Souada 1970 income name
from a fund drive. Ha further stated the Sauced had no significant liabilities
at this time.
Mr. Efland further noted that 3,834 man hours of time were devoted to answering
the 849 calls completed during 1970. If an additional two hours of work were
required for each man hour of call time, a not unreasonable assumption, than
approximately 12,OD0 man hours of time were devoted to community service by the
Souad members. At a rate of $3.00 per hour this service could be valued at $36,OOD.
Mr. Harry Pape, Lieutenant, in charge of the Cedar Grove Seuad reported that
at the present the Cedar Grove unit of the Rescue Souad was quartered in the
Agriculture Building of the old Aycock School. This Seuad was answering about 17
calls nor month.
Mr. Lindsay Efland reported on the operation of the Efland unit of the
Reacua Seuad. This unit ^tarted operation soma time ago using a 19$4 Cadillac
Ambulance. Tomorrow they will pleas into operation a 1971 Ford Van. The 1954
Cedillas will be given to the newly Pound South Orange Rescue Seuad.
Mr. Lloyd Seater of Carrboro reported that a South Orange Rescue Squad was
being found. At present 15 persons had completed the first phase of their first
aid training. This would allow them to Qualify as ambulance attendants. Soon
Mr. Senter said this new group would have from twenty-five to thirty qualified
members and would be applying for a charter as the South Orang® Rescue Squad.
Dr. Sarah 17ent, former Squad Commander and now its Medical Officer, stated
the Squads problem now is apace. xhey need training daily and have no place to
go to undertake this work. Anew building is necessary to implement their
continuing training program. In order for the Seuad to build and grow they must
have some place to go.
Mr. Bob Strayhorn, Chairman of the Squads Planning Committee, said his group
was developing an idea about how a Squad Building might be arranged and what
should be in it. At resent their thoughts are leaning towards a three story
structure about b0 z ~0.
Mr. Marshall Cates, who sated sa Chairman of the fund drive for the Seuad last
summer, said he hoped plans could be formulated to construct a Squad Building.
They render a great service to the County and should be provided adequate Quarters
from which to provide this service.
Mr. Compton concluded by pointing out it would b® almost impossible to raise
funds to construct a Seuad Building and also continue raising funds for the
Squad operation too. Perhaps the Board of County Commissioners would be willing
tc construct a building for the Seuad and lease it back to them for a nominal sum.
Chairman Bennett advised the Squad members that the Board of County
Commissioners was aware of the service the unit was rendering to the Cavnty,
aware of the value of this service and felt deeply appreciative to the Seuad for
performing this task. They would give Mr. Compton~s reaueat their serious
consideration right away.
The County Administrator presented to the Board the Pollowing resolution:
