1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: November 18, 2008 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~ - q <br />SUBJECT: Bid Award: Fiber and Telephone Cable Project, Orange County Solid Waste and <br />Animal Shelter <br />DEPARTMENT: Purchasing, Solid Waste, PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />Information Systems and <br />Animal Services <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Pam Jones, 245-2652 <br />Bid Tabulation Gayle Wilson, 968-2885 <br />Bob Marotto, 968-2287 <br />Todd Jones, 245-2285 <br />PURPOSE: To consider awarding a bid to Integrated Communication Services (ICS) of Raleigh, <br />North Carolina to construct a fiber connection between the new Solid Waste Operations Center <br />(SWOC) and new Animal Shelter Facility (ASF) and connect the SWOC with other buildings at the <br />Landfill. <br />BACKGROUND: The County has contracted with Time Warner Cable to provide a network connection <br />to the new Solid Waste Operations Center for access to the County's network. There is a need to <br />provide network access to the following County buildings in the vicinity: <br />• Solid Waste Maintenance Building <br />• Solid Waste Scale House <br />• Animal Shelter <br />Paying for a single network connection brought into one demarcation point and sharing among the <br />three buildings over a County owned fiber network would eliminate approximately $2,000 a month for <br />dedicated connections to each. <br />Connecting the following buildings with telephone cable is also a part of the project. <br />• Solid Waste Maintenance Building <br />• Solid Waste Scale House <br />• Staff trailer <br />• Eubanks Road Convenience Center <br />This will allow Solid Waste to integrate these locations into its new telephone system allowing much <br />better communication. In most instances the system will be placed in the same trench as the fiber, <br />saving on labor costs. The lines will be placed on existing North Carolina Department of <br />
