Relations with Durham County L 1444-
There is considerable (and understandable) anger growing within Durham County with
regard to this project. It has not escaped notice that while on the one hand Carrboro,
citing the potential pollution of drinking water, recently turned down a request to put an
organic golf course in the University Lake watershed, while Orange County is proceeding
full speed ahead to put a C &D landfill within a stone's throw of Durham's Lime River.
The assumption made in Durham County is that the difference here has to do with whose
watershed is threatened.
This issue has the potential to poison relations between Durham and Orange Counties for
years to come. Consider:
- -The Durham County Commissioners have already expressed their opposition to this
project.
-- Durham County is intervening with the state DNER to oppose the issuance of a permit
for this facility.
-- Durham County's zoning ordinance would not allow the development of any C&D
landfill this close to the Little River. If this site were a few hundred yards to the east it
would not be permitted because of Durham County's watershed protection zoning.
-- Consider what will happen the first time wastes from this facility are found floating
down the Little River?
-- Consider what will happen the first time there is a serious accident along Guess Road
(or elsewhere along the transportation route) due to debris falling onto the roadway from
trucks heading to this facility?
