ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: September 21, 1999
Action Agenda
Item No. /o -A
SUBJECT: Triangle Land Conservancy Report: A Landscape with Wildlife, Part II
DEPARTMENT: Environment and Resource PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No
Conservation
ATTACHMENT(S):
TLC Report (previously provided)
-INFORMATION CONTACT:
David Stancil, ext 2590
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough
732 -8181
Chapel Hill
968 -4501
Durham
688 -7331
Mebane
336- 227 -2031
PURPOSE: To receive a report from representatives of Triangle Land Conservancy entitled
"Rating Land In Orange County By Its Wildlife Value; A Landscape with Wildlife for Orange
County, Part II."
BACKGROUND: In 1996, with funding from Orange County, the Triangle Land Conservancy
(TLC) developed "A Landscape With Wildlife for Orange County, Part I." This report identified
important prime forest areas in the County and their overland connectors, and assessed the
loss of forest land that had occurred in the previous decade. TLC previously authored the
County's "Inventory of Natural Areas and Wildlife Habitat' in 1988, also with funding from the
County.
In 1998, the County asked TLC to continue its work on prime forests with a follow -up report.
This report, "Rating Land by Its Wildlife Value" was received in July. The report uses a formula
approach to identify and evaluate the most significant prime hardwood forests in the County.
There are a number of recommendations in the report on ways to use the formula. The authors
of the report, Haven Wiley and Livy Ludington, will be present to present the findings.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None at this time. Some of the recommendations of the report call for
acquisition of key prime forest areas for preservation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report and
refer it to the Commission for the Environment and Environment and Resource Conservation
staff, for evaluation and incorporation into the upcoming Orange Lands Legacy program.
