INTRODUCTION
he objective of this report is to help citi-
zens of Orange County make decisions
about habitats for native wildlife. Most
of these species depend on forests, the habitat
that covered most of Orange County until two
hundred years ago. A report on the first phase of
this project, Landscape With Wildlife for Orange
County (1997), accompanied a series of maps of
the County's forests and emphasized the impor-
tance of these forests for native wildlife.
The present report, the second phase of this
project, describes a way to rate the forests of
Orange County by their predicted values for
wildlife and presents a series of maps with these
ratings for the County's remaining forests.
The first part of this report reviews some
characteristics of forests important for native
wildlife. The next part explains a way to rate
tracts of forest by the presence or absence of
these important characteristics. The final part
suggests some ways these ratings can help to
preserve the forests of Orange County and their
native wildlife.
Barred c
3
