ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. ~~
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: October 5, 1999
SUBJECT: Feasibility of Developing a Durham Technical Community College Branch
DEPARTMENT: Commissioners' Office
ATTACHMENT(S):
PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/l~
BUDGET AMENDMENT: (Y/N)
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Commissioner Moses Cazey , Jr.
TELEPHONE NUMBERS: - -ext.
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 227-2031
rutu~v~t;: i o consider appointing an ad hoc committee to study and make recommendations on the
feasibility of developing a Durham Technical Community College Branch in the County.
BACKGROUND:. Orange County is officially included within the service azea of Durham Technical
Community College. Approximately 20% of Durham Technical Community College students resides in Orange
County. County residents coming out of high school and those who need training to compete for better paying
jobs inside and outside of the County should have the opportunity to receive the training they need closer to
their homes.
Therefore, I ask the Boadd to appoint a committee to study and make recommendations of the need and
feasibility of developing a branch of Durham Technical Community College in Orange County. The most
logical place for such development is in Hillsborough since the new Skills Development Center is available to
provide needed access to training opportunities in Chapel Hill.
If it were deemed feasible to pursue such a branch, I would ask that the possibility of co-location on the site of
the new high school to be developed by Orange County Schools be explored. The timing for such joint
planning if this project is feasible is now.
The committee to study this issue should, at a minimum, include the following individuals and/or groups:
• Orange County Schools Superintendent
• Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools Superintendent
• One School Board Member from each system
• At least one County Commissioner
• County Manager or designee
• Two Representatives from Durham Technical Community College (selected by the President of the
DTCC)
• One Representative of each Chamber of Commerce in the County
• One member of the Orange County Economic Development Commission
• Orange Public Transportation Director
• Three Citizens-at-large
