Moore, Director -ext. 2254 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. <br />BACKGROUND: The Governor has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awazeness Month in <br />North Cazolina. Orange/Durham Coalition for Battered Woman as well as other local women's <br />organizations in Orange County has planned activities to educate citizens on domestic violence such as: a <br />24-hour rape free zone, week-long domestic violence education seminazs, a candle light vigil by the <br />Orange County Woman's Commission, a clothing and necessities drive and intense lobbying by local <br />women's organizations to ask that Congress reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The manager recommends that the Boazd adopt the proclamation. <br />
