B00!( ~ ~,LE 2SO <br />Minutes of the previous meetings were read by the Clerk and approved by the <br />Board. <br />Chairman Smith recognized Fred Cates, Mayor of the Town of Hillsborough. Mr. <br />Gates congratulated the incumbent Democratic candidates of the Board for their <br />recent elections. <br />Chairman Smith thanked Mayor Cates for his remarks. <br />Chairman Smith adjourned the meeting as a Board of County Commissioners and =- <br />reconvened the meeting as the Commissioners of the Orange County Housing Authourity. <br />Coolidge Porterfield, Secretary of the Housing Authority, read the minutes _ <br />of the previous meetings. ~- <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ward, seconded by Commissioner Ray, the minutes <br />were approved and adopted. <br />There being no further business to come before the Housing Authority, Chairman <br />Smith adjourned the meeting and reconvened as a Board of County Commissioners. <br />Discussion ensued relative to the need of a joint meeting between the Board <br />and the members of the ABC Board. It was decided that the Board would meet jointly <br />with the ABC Board on Wednesday, June 17th at 8 o~clock P.M. in the Commissioners <br />Room of the Court Hquse. <br />Upon motion of Commissioners Sennett and Walker, with same being seconded by <br />Commissioners Ray and Ward, the fallowing resolution was unanimously adopted. <br />WHEREAS, Donald McIver Stanford attained a position of distinctior_ <br />in his community, County and State both by his public service and his <br />private life; and <br />WHEREAS, he served as a member of the Board of County Commissioners <br />of Orange County from 1956 to 1964; and <br />WHEREAS, he served as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners <br />of Orange County from 1960 to 1964; and <br />WHEREAS, the people. of Orange County demonstrated their regard <br />and respect for him by electing him to represent Orange Countyin _ <br />the North Carolina General Assembly, a position in which he served <br />from 1965 to 1970; and <br />WHEREAS, he continued a tradition of public service which had <br />been established and practiced for many years by his 111ustrious <br />family; and <br />WHEREAS, Divine Providence terminated his life on the 4th day <br />of May, 1970; and <br />WHEREAS, By his death the people of Orange County have been <br />deprived of a valued and esteemed public servant and private citizen; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Commissioners <br />of Orange County by this resolution does express its deep sense of <br />loss and its appreciation of the many contributions of Donald <br />Mclver Stanford to his community, County and State and its deep <br />sense of loss suffered by his untimely death. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon <br />the minutes of this meeting and that a copy be transmitted to the <br />bereaved members of his family. <br />Chairman Smith read to the Board a letter received from the State Highway <br />Department relative to the petitions received from Orange County and the funds <br />which would be needed if said petitions were accepted. Chairman Smith informed <br />the Board that this was by way of information only, as it was evident that the <br />road petitS.ans far exceeded the funds allocated to Orange County. <br />Norman Long, Zoning Officer, presented a letter dated May 19, 1970, relative <br />to the following recommendations of the County Planning Board. <br />1. On the request of NLr. W. 0. Petty requesting rezoning <br />from a Residential District to a General Commercial District <br />property located in the intersection of Highway #70 and State <br />Road #1710 and adjoining Dixie Moble Home Park District on the <br />West, the board recommends approval. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Sennett, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted that the recommendation of the County Planning Board <br />be approved. <br />
