_~ . a
October 4, 1999
To: Orange County Board of Commissioners
Chair Person, Alice Gordon
Vice-Chair, Dr. Steve Hallciotis
Commissioner Moses Carey
Commissioner Margaret Bro
Commissioner Barry Jacobs
County Manager John Link
From: Sheriff Lindy
Re: Flood assistance rendered by the Orange County Sheriffls Office
to Greene and Duplin Counties.
~~r
On September 20, 1999 the North Carolina Sheriff s Association called this Office and asked if we
could provide assistance to flooded eastern counties. Due to the flooding they were experiencing they
were in dire need for personnel to give relief to their personnel.
We were asked to contact those counties listed and respond with whatever assistance we could give.
We called and spoke with Sheriff Lemmie Smith of Greene County. Sheriff Smith asked if we could
respond with personnel to relieve his personnel who had been working without any relief for over a
week.
On September 21, 1999 at 0700 hours eighteen deputies and Major Don Truelove reported for duty in
Greene County and provided law enforcement services to the Sheriffls Office. Duties performed
ranged from security duty at distribution centers, unloading food trucks, traffic control for flooded
roads, patrolling and responding to citizen calls for assistance and other routine law enforcement
duties. These deputies were relieved mid morning Thursday, September 23, 1999.
Total hours expended for Greene County 1036 man-hours.
On September 22, 1999 Sheriff Glen Jernigan of Duplin County requested assistance.
On September 23, 1999 ten deputies and Major Truelove were sent toDuplin County and performed
basically the same services as in Greene County.
Total hours expended for Duplin County 375 man-hours.
Mutual Aid Agreements were prepared and signed by both Greene and Duplin Counties requesting our
assistance.
Several citizens have called us from both, Duplin and Greene Counties, in the past few days thanking
us for all we did for them.
In Greene County several deputies lost their. homes including the Sheriff. It was not until we arrived: in
their county that they had the opportunity to go and check on their own property.
