7 ''?,( 206 MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />July 7, 1969 <br />The Board of Orange County Commissioners met in regular session in the <br />Commissioners Room at the Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina on Monday, <br />July 7, 1969, at 10:00 otolock A.M. <br />Members Present: Chairman Carl M. Smith, and Commissioners Harvey D. Bennett <br />and Ira A. Ward. <br />Members Absent: Commissioners William C. Ray and Henry S. Walker. <br />Minutes of the previous meetings were read and approved after corrections <br />were made. <br />Burch Compton, Commander of the Orange County Rescue Squad, was present <br />and made a report of ambulance operations during the last sic months. He stated <br />that three hundred and one (301) ambulance calls had been made during this period. <br />Mr. Compton pointed out that the squad was self supporting and had accumulated <br />three vehicles and two boats. He further stated that they plan to move one of <br />their vehicles into the Cedar Grove area since fourteen members live in that area. <br />Chairman Smith congratulated Mr. Compton on the success of the Rescue Squad <br />and expressed the appreciation of the County to the members of the squad for the <br />outstanding service which is being rendered to the citizens of Northern Orange <br />County. <br />Robert D. Brook and Mrs. Mary D. Brook were present to discuss with the <br />Board the construction of a new road off Piney Mountain Road near Estes Hill <br />School. Chairman Smith advised Mr. Brook to file a road petition with the State <br />Highway Commission. <br />Norman Long, County Zoning Officer, reported the action taken by the Planning <br />Board concerning matters discussed at the last Public Hearing. After noting <br />that prior to the thirty day limitation the Planning Board had advised the Board <br />of Commissioners of its decision regarding these re-zoning proposals. Mr. Long <br />proceeded to review each item and they are as follows: <br />1. Request of Jack Gates for re-zoning of a tract of land along <br />Highway #54 to a mobile home park. Mr. Long reported he had <br />investigated this case and the Planning Board had determined <br />Mr. Gates was operating a mobile home park on this site prior <br />to the adoption of the ordinance. The Planning Board therefore <br />recommended this request be approved. <br />2. Reo-uest of Kenneth Cheek for re-zoning of a tract at the inter- <br />section of North Carolina 86 and SR #1733 (Weaver Dairy Road) <br />from residential to general commercial be approved. <br />3. Request made by Paul Robertson on behalf of Mrs. Rufus W. Smith <br />and Mr. Robert Glosson for re-zoning of 13 acres South of North <br />Carolina Highway 54 on State Road 19411 from residential to general <br />industrial be denied. <br />L?. The request made by Jefferson Builders on behalf of Claude Best <br />for re-zoning a tract of land, on the East side of U. S. Highway <br />15-501 near the Chatham County line, from residential to general <br />commercial be denied. <br />The Board of County Commissioners received these recommendations. No action <br />was taken. <br />J Chairman Smith reported that he met with Officials of the Town of Chapel Hill, <br />the Town of Carrboro and the University regarding the water problem currently <br />being encountered by the University of North Carolina. -_ <br />Chairman Smith read a letter from the Town of Mebane relative to the <br />appointment of Mr. Lonnie Evans to the Town Planning Board. The Town Clerk <br />advised that Mr. Evans was now a resident of the city and was to be appointed <br />to the Planning Board as a Town Member and was being appointed by the Town of <br />Mebane. This would leave the County in the position of having to name another <br />person to the Mebane Town Planning Board. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Bennett, seconded by Commissioner Ward, it was <br />moved and unanimously adopted, that Franklin Childress be appointed to the <br />Mebane Planning Board to fi11 the unexpired term of J. Willard Oakley.
