86
Break Out Session Notes And Comments:
LAND USE ELEMENT
^ How do we achieve mixed uses in transition areas and EDD's?
^ Workshops/charettes for small areas where development will go.
^ Importance of projects even if you live in a municipality.
^ Preserving farmland in LUE?
^ Explore innovative wastewater treatment.
^ Transit -oriented development
^ Create administrative systems and mechanisms to expedite desirable development.
RECREATION AND PARKS
^ School facilities, such as tennis courts, should be open to the public.
^ Regional and local connectivity between parks and school facilities.
^ Rural Ways (for biking, hiking, wallcing) such as linear paths and critical recreation for
Orange County. Use donated or purchased easements.
TRASNPORTATION
^ Rural Ways -pedestrian and biking connectivity through easements.
PROCESS
^ How do we keep track of the potential costs of the principles that we might adopt?
HOUSING
^ Please resist the urge to accept payments in lieu of affordability if/when development set-
asides apply and developers don't want to comply. We need the units. Instead work with
non-profit developers during the applicant processes to determine innovative, high-
dernand ways to make set-aside compliance meet needs.
^ Don't reduce language around affordable housing to "workforce" housing.
^ Smaller houses. Recommended a book, "Tin Houses." There ought to be a way in
Orange County to have smaller houses. Current building practices set up to support
.corporations.
^ Recommendation to look on-line for Seattle co-housing information.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
^ Balance county development by developing a commercial sector that provides a third or
more of county revenue.
^ Link between economic development, population growth, etc. this also includes planning
for schools and water supplies.
^ Expedite desirable commercial and light industrial projects.
^ Create lab and commercial space for UNC ideas to become businesses.
4 of 4
