Three North Carolina <br />Scenic Byways pass through Orange County-the Colonial Heritage <br />may the Football Road and the Scots-Welsh Byway. tSee Map 6-3 in <br />the Summary section of this Element.) <br />HIGHWAY MARKER PROGRAM <br />The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program was established <br />in 1935, based on the marker program in Virginia established -in 1926. <br />The Department of Cultural Resources' Research Branch and the <br />Department of Transportation's Traffic Engineering Branch, Division of <br />Highways administer the program jointly. Eligibility is subject to <br />specific criteria based on state significance. Unlike the recognition of <br />historic structures or archaeological sites, the markers typically <br />commemorate important individuals who have been dead for twenty- <br />five or more years. Today there are more than 1,400 state markers <br />throughout North Carolina, at least one in every county.
