My passion and attention
is on the health and safety of children in this community. Specifically we need cross
walks on Churton and a CAC. I am planning an event August 9th for Child Health and
Safety. I am interested in opening up these two issues up as a public forum.
CROSSWALKS: Since Route 86 is a state route, this becomes a state level issue and a MAJOR
problem for us locally. Recently in a local newspaper was a front page story about the
very high number of pedestrian deaths in Orange County!
CAC: The other issue for the community is the urgent need for a CAC (Child Advocacy
Center). A CAC protects our community from crime, supports children and families who have
been the victims of sexual assault on children and alters the prosecution rate from about.
12 % to 94% because these cases are managed by a team of multi-disciplinary professionals
(New model versus independent agencies (old model, the old model allows too many issues
to be "ignored". In North Carolina we have several counties that have CACs in place. One
of the requirements to receive state funding is that a CAC operate successfully for two
years. This is in cooperation with the National CAC, our local law enforcement, the
Orange County Rape Crisis Center, medical professionals, DSS and a few other agencies.
Dr. Nancy Taylor
(919) 732-1426
1
