158
Tom Altieri
From: Janet Schoendorf (Janet@schoe.com]
Sent: ~ Sunday, June 01, 2008 4:34 PM
To: CompPlanUpdate
Subject: One small comment
Dear Members of the Orange County Department of Planning and Inspections,
Please refer to the p.32 of the Services and Facilities Elementof the Comprehensive Plan, Objective PS-T-6
which talks about limiting the number of future wireless telecommunication facilities by identifying preferred
locations. I am opposed to the dea of limiting cell phone towers, because no one, but customers of Alltel,
receives adequate reception on his/her cell phone in Chapel Hill. This has essentially created a monopoly for
Alltel, which dreadful for the customer. It is also a problerri for visitors to the.area who use other cell phone
companies. Really, it seems backward to be in a place like Orange County, with so much other high tech activity
going on, and then not to be able to receive a decent signal on one's cell phone. It is very frustrating, and not
very good for business or consumers. In addition, I don't think cell phone towers are more offensive in
appearance than any other utility pole, so if we had more than we needed, it would be preferable to an insufficient
number. Perhaps some compromise could be reached? Maybe Orange County could request that all cell phone
companies that wanted to do business in Orange County put in a specified amount of money into a cell phone
tower pool. This pool of money could then be used to build cell towers that all companies would share. Orange
County wireless experts could specify where these towers should be built for maximum coverage with a minimum
of towers. Companies, new to the area, could be added on for a fee.
Please modify the plan to insure that Orange County has sufficient towers to provide adequate wireless
coverage, no matter what cell phone company one uses.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Janet Schoendorf
6/6/2008
