131
Tom Aitieri
From: tmaguire@newspaper.com
Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 11.:19 AM
To: CompPlanUpdate
Subject: Comments
I have reviewed the updated version of the Orange County master plan and offer these brief
comments in making three recommendations.
The first is that I do not believe that transportation other than automobilies ought to be
considered "alternative". Rather, I think that all transportation modes ought to be
considered on .the same basis. An automobile is one, a bus another, trains, feet, bicycles,
etc. None is more "equal" than any other.
The second is that I believe we should commit ourselves to having as fully functional a
sidewalk network. in Orange County as we do one for automobiles. In other. words,- if we are
going to consider comprehensive plans for how our automobiles and other vehicles get
around the county, we should do the same for. people who choose to walk. The current
sidewalk route throughout the county is abysmal and demands and deserve the same level of
attention as that given to the road system.
The third is that I do not recall seeing in the document a comprehensive discussion of
energy production and use in the county. Perhaps I just missed it, but I think any master
plan today ought to contain information on energy consumption and on local energy
production. Again, I would not use the term "alternative". Solar energy ,production, .for
example, deserves to be treated in exactly the same way as any other energy we produce
here.
Thanks for considering these views.
Terry Maguire
143 Graylyn Drive
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
919-960-4503
mail2web.com - Microsoft° Exchange solutions from a leading provider -
http:%/link.mail2web.com/Business/Exchange
1
