113
Walkable Hillsborough Coalition (WaHC)
December 13, 2007
To Whom it May Concern
regarding the Orange County Comprehensive Plan Update Coalition
The Walkable Hillsborough Coalition (WaHC) would like to express its support of the Comprehensive
Plan Update Coalition's effort to bring community stakeholders togetherto learn aboutthe elements of
Orange County's Comprehensive Plan Update (CPU) and to provide input based on our shared values as
diverse organizations.
WaHC is a volunteer group formed in 2001 whose mission it is to promote and advocate for pedestrian-
friendly communities. We recognize the importance of walkable communities for improving individual
health, community health, environmental health and economic wellbeing for Hillsborough residents, for
surrounding communities, and especially for our Orange County school children. Some of ourvolunteer
work has included co-sponsoring an annual Walkable Hillsborough Day in June for the past five years
with the Town of Hillsborough, as well as applying for Active living by Design and Fit Communities
grants to seek funds and support for pedestrian-first communities and walkable schools. NCDOT has
referred to WaHC as the first pedestrian-only advocacy group Jn North Carolina.
WaHC supports the CPU Coalition's efforts to have the CPU reflect our organization's interest far new
and appropriate existing development to be compact, walkable, mixed-use and transit supportive. We
appreciate the wori<ofthe Coalition to find common ground across divergentorganizationswlth diverse
missions, as well as the Coalition's push for public involvement. early in the CPU process.
Holly Reid, co-founder
Walkable Hillsborough Coalition
15 of 16
