1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: October 7, 2008 <br />Action Agen a <br />Item No. - ~ <br />SUBJECT: Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation <br />DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Proclamation Laura Blackmon, 245-2300 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. <br />BACKGROUND: The Governor has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness <br />Month in North Carolina. In North Carolina, according to the North Carolina Council for <br />Women/Domestic Violence Commission, domestic violence agencies responded to over <br />119,348 crisis calls and provided services to over 48,173 victims last year. Prevention <br />strategies involve collaborations by multiple partners to promote social norms, policies, and <br />laws that support gender equity and foster intimate partnerships based on mutual respect, <br />equality, and trust. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of the <br />proclamation. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation <br />and authorize the Chair to sign it. <br />
