ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: October 7, 2008
Action Agenda
Item No.
SUBJECT• Orange County Arts Grant Recipients
DEPARTMENT: Orange County Arts PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Commission
ATTACHMENT(S):
Copy of Awards to be Distributed
"Specific Attendee List to Follow"
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Martha Shannon, 245-2335
PURPOSE: To present checks to local artists and arts organizations receiving the 2008 Spring
cycle of Orange County Arts Grants.
BACKGROUND: The Orange County Arts Commission grants funds to arts organizations in
the spring cycle from funds received from state government through the Grassroots Arts
Program of the North Carolina Arts Council. The funds are distributed by the state after the NC
Legislature has adjourned. State funds are actually received by the Orange County Arts
Commission in the fall. These funds are distributed for arts programming in all arts disciplines.
Each grant recipient must match the grant amount in order to receive funding.
Because state arts money funds only non-profit organizations, any grants awarded to individual
artists (in either the Spring or Fall grant cycles) are made from Orange County funds approved
for arts grants.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: A total of $37,095 will be awarded in this cycle. The $36,095 in state
funds awarded for arts programming to non-profit organizations and the Arts Commission
represents apass-through of state funds, and has no financial impact on Orange County. The
*$1,000 awarded to individual artists is taken from Orange County funds already approved for
arts grants.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board acknowledge the local
recipients of the awards during the October 7, 2008 meeting with the presentation of checks by
the Board Chair.
