Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider approving a $10,226 Smart Start Grant for the Traveling Treasures from Orange <br />County Partnership for Young Children <br />BACKGROUND: On June 25, 1999 the Orange County Public Library submitted a grant proposal to the <br />.Orange County Partnership for Young Children for the purpose of developing and improving reading <br />skills for Latino preschoolers and their families through the circulation of bilingual Treasure Boxes, <br />Teacher Resource Collections, and Storytime Services to Day Care Centers. Traveling Treasures will <br />provide bilingual library materials and services to Latino preschoolers who are unable to benefit from <br />regular library services. These preschoolers are underserved primarily due to cultural, socioeconomic or <br />educational disadvantages.. By partnering with the Orange County Schools Director of Secondary <br />Education, Migrant Recruiter and local Latino community leaders, materials will be circulated to Latino <br />preschoolers living in northern Orange County. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT:. This grant will increase the library budget by $10,226. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board accept the Orange County <br />Partnership for Young Children Grant of $10,226. <br />
