~i <br />Chapter 9: Transportation Element <br />k'~~ c <br />1 COUNT-Y-WIDE ROAD NETWORK <br />2 Orange County's road network is comprised of a hierarchy of roads <br />3 including interstates, major US and NC highways, North Carolina <br />4 Secondary Roads, and local roads that serve different functions in <br />s providing access to other regions and within Orange County. <br />6 <br />7 Interstate 40 and lnterstafe 85 are part of the Federal Interstate <br />s Highway System and are the major corridors that provide for <br />9 transport of people and goods through Orange County fo other <br />1o regions, including employment centers in the Triangle Area (Durham, <br />11 Research Triangle Park and Raleigh) to the east and the Triad <br />12 (Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point) to the west. <br />13 <br />14 Major US and NC routes linking Orange County with surrounding <br />15 areas also provide intro-county access and linkage to the rural areas <br />16 of the County. US 70 is a major highway that provides east-west <br />17 access through Orange County, linking the City of Durham in Durham <br />1 s County, the Town of Hillsborough in Orange County and the Town of <br />19 Mebane in A/amance County. US 15 and US 501 provide north-south <br />20 access linking the City of Durham to the Towns of Chapel Hill and <br />21 Carrboro and the Town of Pittsboro in Chatham County. NC 86 <br />22 provides north-south access through Orange County from Caswell <br />23 County and links the Towns of Hillsborough and Chapel Hill. NC 57 <br />24 provides north-south access from Person County through Orange <br />2s County to the Town of Hillsborough.
