Orange County NC Website
1 ~"i
There is some discrepancies between the tables and graphs. For example, in table B2i, Johnston and Lee
counties are left out while they are shown in table B2g.
p. B2-7, Figure B2j, Municipal Density Percentages, 2005
The title is confusing since the chart does not have anything to do with density. Instead of "Municipal
Density Percentages," it should say "Municipal Land Area Percentages".
p. B3-1, Hovsing Section 83.2, 2^d Bullet HIGHLIGHTS
Clarify what the 9-fold increase in housing costs is compared to: the entire US or state of NC?
p. 83-2, Housing Section B3.2, 2^d to last bullet HIGHLIGHTS
Clarify what type of housing the "average rents" apply to. From looking at the charts later on, this
statement refers to apartments, although it is not clear the size of the apartments (bedrooms baths).
p. B3-2, Table 63a, Orange Covnty Housing Profile, 2000
This chart shows the median contract rent although the summary for the section mentions the average
contract rent. Can these be made more consistent?
p. B3-10, Table Bap, Orange Covnhr Availability of Three Bedroom Apartments by
Median Income
It would be useful if this chart included another row that showed what the affordable level for each
income group would be. Chart B3m for the single family housing indicates what the affordable price is
and a similar value would be useful for the 3-bedroom apartments.
p.B4-3, Table Bob (Regional Income Comparisons, 1970-2000)
Since the comparison to be made in this table is how Orange County compares to other counties in the
region, counties should be listed horizontally, with items being compared underneath. Basically,
transpose the table.
p.BS-2, Section 5.2 (Environmental Highlights)
The following claim is made here:
• During this same time period (1970-2004), major reductions in pollutant loadings took place.
'This claim is unsubstantiated by a reference and needs more context. It is likely, for example, that the
reductions mentioned were PER CAPITA, not gross reductions.
p.86-2, Section B6.2 (Transportation Highlights)
The following, reported here in the Transportation section, should also be reported in Section B4.2,
Economic Highlights and section B5.5, Environmental Highlights:
. In 2000, 60,860 Orange County residents were employed. Of those, 42.4% commuted to
another county for work.
. In 2000, 24,096 commuters worked in Orange County, representing 40% of the county's
workforce.
This information has significant economic and environmental impact as well as relevance to the county's
transportation situation.
We strongly recommend that data about the types of jobs & median wages found in each cohort -the
group commuting in and the one commuting out should be included as well in the appendices. We need
more detailed information in order to be able to address issues associated with this condition including:
1) the carbon emissions and air quality associated with high vehicle miles traveled;
The Village Project • PO Box b85 • Carrboro NC 27510 • 919-942-6114 • www thevillageproject.com 12
