HOUSING <br />producers can make value-added products, <br />such as jams, pickles, or tamales. <br />Other significant initiatives include farmer <br />incubation projects; land-trust and land- <br />care development projects; farmer training <br />and networking events, community <br />awareness and education events; a <br />"sustainable living" educational center; <br />and developing local farmer cooperatives <br />capable of purchasing vital processing <br />facilities (of their own choice) such as those <br />needed for chicken and meat processing <br />and produce cleaning and packaging. <br />1.3.2 HUMANDEVELOPMENT <br />No plan for the future can be complete <br />without provisions for long-term social and <br />economic vitality. High-value local <br />enterprise and committed, critical-thinking <br />citizens are best developed in educational <br />settings that emphasize meaningful, hands- <br />on, problem solving experiences and <br />creative, cooperative learning. The best <br />schools also implement model communities <br />and economies, which help students build <br />confidence and know-how while learning <br />about all the practical aspects of life, from <br />balancing a checkbook and working with <br />others to starting a business and <br />negotiating contracts. Empowering, <br />cooperative education builds community <br />ties along with know-how. <br />1.3.3. HOUSING <br />Housing that is affordable across the full <br />price spectrum is indispensable to a diverse <br />society and a healthy economy.
