ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: August 19, 2008
Action Ag ~nd ~~
Item No.
SUBJECT: Ratify Acquisition of Fitness Equipment for the SportsPlex
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing and Central PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Services
ATTACHMENT(S):
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam Jones, (919) 245-2652
PURPOSE: To ratify actions taken during the Board's summer break to acquire fitness
equipment for the SportsPlex.
BACKGROUND: As the Board may recall from earlier discussions, the fitness/cardio
equipment at the SportsPlex will be re-located to the newly completed mezzanine area that has
been constructed over-looking the ice rink. The mezzanine provides a significantly larger area
for this popular program and will require additional equipment to meet the membership needs.
The need for additional equipment was anticipated, and the costs for such are included in the
SportsPlex's operating budget. John Stock and ,his staff have done extensive research of
equipment at surrounding facilities and are recommending multi-function pieces that will well
serve all segments of the membership, including seniors.
In order to lock-in pricing at its current level and to ensure timely delivery of the equipment in
time for the late August opening of the mezzanine area, staff requested the Board authorize the
Manager to move forward with the approximately $135,000 contracts in late July. This action
allowed the County to take advantage of lower pricing since the quotes were in process before
the recent supplier price increases took affect. Further, the suppliers were able to move the
order into the supply queue early during a period when private fitness clubs nation-wide have
traditionally placed orders, which could have significantly delayed delivery of the equipment to
the new facility.
The equipment will be acquired as follows:
• Strength equipment: This equipment has a long useful life and would not need to be
replaced in the near future. For that purpose, the $61,244 in equipment will be
purchased outright with funds appropriated as part of the FY 2008-2009 SportsPlex
budget;
