ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: August 19, 2008
Action Agenda
Item No.
SUBJECT: Sprinkler System Installation at Orange County Emergency Services
Warehouse Area
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam Jones, 919-245-2652
PURPOSE: To consider approving a change order to install a sprinkler system in the Orange
County warehouse facility within the Emergency Services building at 510 Meadowlands Drive.
BACKGROUND: Code officials have recently determined the County could install a sprinkler
system in the approximately 11,000 square foot warehouse area of the 510 Meadowlands Drive
building without the need to do so in other areas of the building that contain sensitive dispatch
equipment. Sprinkling any part of the building was originally thought to be cost prohibitive for
the project. However, prudent project management, coupled with approval to sprinkle the area
where the greatest fire exposure would exist, allows this action to be considered.
In addition, sprinkling the warehouse area would allow use of the shelves that are located more
than 12 feet above floor level and would substantially increase allowable storage capacity,
which is important since this is the County's primary facility for non-records, bulky item storage.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The cost of installing the sprinkler system in the warehouse area is
estimated not to exceed $85,750. The cost represents aturn-key sprinkler installation (design,
fabrication, installation and commissioning). These funds are currently available in the capital
project budget.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board authorize a change order
not to exceed $85,750 for the addition of a dedicated sprinkler system for the warehouse area at
510 Meadowlands Drive; and authorize the Manager to sign.
