6 <br />V <br />1 devices to families in need, promoting new technology and raising awareness through the <br />2 media; and <br />3 <br />4 WHEREAS, Safe Kids USA, with the support of founding sponsor, Johnson & Johnson, <br />5 launches Safe Kids Week 2008 "Gear Up for Safety," which focuses on celebrating 20 years of <br />6 creating a safer world for kids and promoting efforts to make further progress to protect children <br />7 from accidental injuries. <br />8 <br />9 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, <br />10 do hereby proclaim the week of April 26 — May 4, 2008 as Safe Kids Week in Orange County <br />11 and encourage and call upon all the residents of this County to support the efforts and activities <br />12 of Orange County Safe Communities to prevent childhood injury. <br />13 <br />14 This, the 1 e day of April 2008. <br />15 <br />16 A motion was made by Commissioner Foushee, seconded by Commissioner Carey to <br />17 approve a proclamation recognizing the week of April 26 — May 4, 2008 as SAFE KIDS Week in <br />18 Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />19 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />20 <br />21 b. Evans and Bond Award for Outstanding Toxicity Reduction Program <br />22 The Board considered recognizing the Solid Waste Management Department for its <br />23 efforts in reducing hazardous waste in Orange County and commending the department for <br />24 receiving the 2007 Bill Evans and Carol Bond Award for Outstanding Toxicity Reduction. <br />25 Assistant County Manager Gwen Harvey said that she is recognizing Rob Taylor and <br />26 Blair Pollock with the Solid Waste Department. This is an award that is provided on an annual <br />27 basis by Carolina Recycling Association. This is named for Bill Evans and Carol Bond, who <br />28 were very active in the reduction of hazardous waste materials. She said that what Orange <br />29 County has been doing is very significant, very empowering, and award - winning. <br />30 Blair Pollock said that they were honored to receive this award. Orange County is the <br />31 county with the highest recycling per capita in electronics than any county in North Carolina. <br />32 Orange County also has a broad cooperative relationship with private businesses for recycling. <br />33 Rob Taylor thanked the Board of County Commissioners for its support of the programs <br />34 that make this award possible and the citizens that use their program for disposal of these <br />35 hazardous items. <br />36 Chair Jacobs said that the Board of County Commissioners appreciates all that the staff <br />37 does in being environmentally sound. <br />38 A motion was made by Commissioner Carey seconded by Commissioner Foushee to <br />39 approve recognizing the Solid Waste Management Department for its efforts in reducing <br />40 hazardous waste in Orange County and to commend the department for receiving the 2007 Bill <br />41 Evans and Carol Bond Award for Outstanding Toxicity Reduction. <br />42 <br />43 C. NCACC Outstanding County Proaram Awards Presentation <br />44 The Board received the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) <br />45 Outstanding County Program Awards for Orange County's Spanish Language Assessment Tool <br />46 and the Inspect Plus field computer initiative. <br />47 Laura Blackmon introduced Michelle Love from NCACC, who was here to honor Orange <br />48 County for two awards for outstanding programs. <br />49 Michelle Love said that the NCACC solicits nominations for this program each year and <br />50 this year there were 50 programs nominated.
