3 <br />�i <br />1 NOW, THEREFORE, do we, the Commissioners of Orange County, pass this <br />2 Resolution to Foster Genocide Remembrance, and encourage Orange County residents <br />3 to reflect upon all acts of genocide and intolerance. <br />4 <br />5 THIS THE 1s' DAY OF MAY, 2008. <br />6 <br />7 A motion was made by Commissioner Foushee, seconded by Commissioner Gordon <br />8 to approve the resolution recognizing and remembering the millions who have perished through <br />9 acts of genocide. <br />10 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />11 <br />12 b. National Tourism Week <br />13 The Board considered proclaiming the week of May 10 through 18, 2008 as National <br />14 Tourism Week in Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br />15 Communications Director of the Visitor's Bureau, Patty Griffin, introduced this item. She <br />16 thanked the County Commissioners for consideration of this proclamation. The theme is, <br />17 "Discover Great American Traditions." <br />18 Commissioner Gordon read the proclamation. <br />19 NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK PROCLAMATION <br />20 May 10 -18, 2008 <br />21 <br />22 <br />23 WHEREAS, the travel and tourism industry in Orange County is vital to our economic stability <br />24 and growth, and it contributes substantially to our cultural and social well being; and <br />25 <br />26 WHEREAS, travel benefits every person by substantially enhancing our personal growth and <br />27 education, while promoting intercultural understanding and appreciation of Orange County's <br />28 history, geography and culture; and <br />29 <br />30 WHEREAS, tourism is a growth industry in Orange County generating $137.6 million in <br />31 expenditures in 2006 — an increase of 8.2 percent over the previous year's figures — ranking the <br />32 County 24th in travel impact among North Carolina's 100 counties according to the Travel <br />33 Industry Association of America; and <br />34 <br />35 WHEREAS, state and local tax revenues from travel to Orange County amounted to $10.56 <br />36 million in 2006, representing an $85 tax saving to each County resident; and <br />37 <br />38 WHEREAS, more than 1,710 jobs in Orange County were directly attributable to travel and <br />39 tourism in 2006; and <br />40 <br />41 WHEREAS, travel generated a $27.62 million payroll in 2006; and <br />42 <br />43 WHEREAS, our area attractions, welcome centers and tours hosted more than 1.68 million <br />44 visitors in 2007; <br />45 <br />46 NOW THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, recognize the efforts of <br />47 the Chapel Hill /Orange County Visitors Bureau and do hereby proclaim May 10 -18, 2008 as <br />48 NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK in Orange County, with the theme DISCOVER GREAT <br />
