ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: October 10, 2000
Action Agenda
Item No. -
SUBJECT: Possible Bond Referendum Schedule
DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Attachment 1. November 2001 Bond John Link, extension 2300
Referendum Timetable Donna Dean, extension 2151
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To receive a report on a possible Navember 2001 bond referendum schedule.
BACKGROUND: Over the past few months, the Board of County Commissioners has
discussed the need for a future bond referendum to fund some Schaol and County long-range
capital needs. The Board is currently considering two possible dates for the voters to consider
a bond referendum -November 2001 or November 2002. Recently, staff provided the Board
with a brief timeline comparison related to both dates. At the October 3, 2000 Board of
Commissioners meeting, the Board requested that staff prepare a mare detailed calendar
related to a possible November 2001 referendum (Attachment 1 of this abstract). Generally
speaking, the Baard needs to finalize its decisions regarding outstanding issues such as the
need far future schools, parks, senior centers, and County space study by the end of January
2001. These decisions lay the groundwork for the Commissioner appointed Capital Needs
Advisory Task Force to begin work in early spring 2001 and bring forward recommendations to
the Board regarding projects to include on the referendum by June 2001.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no direct financial impact associated with the attached report
and calendar.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report and
calendar. The Board may choose to discuss the possible bond referendum at a future meeting.
