ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: October 3, 2000 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. S- G <br />SUBJECT: Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation <br />DEPARTMENT: Human Rights and Relations PUBLIC HEARING: (Y!N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Annette Moore, ext 2254 <br />Proclamation TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month <br />BACKGROUND: The Governor has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness <br />Month in North Carolina. The Orange County Commission for Women, the Women's Center, <br />the Rape Crisis Center and the Orange County Family Violence Prevention Center are <br />sponsoring the "March for Justice" candlelight vigil on October 30"' at 6:00 p.m. The march will <br />begin at the Women's Center in Chapel Hill and end at the post office. Other activities include a <br />"Purple Ribbon" Campaign, a information booth at the State Fair, a Billboard Campaign by the <br />NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and intense lobbying by local women's organizations <br />to ask that Congress reauthorize the 1990 Violence Against Women Act. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the Proclamation <br />and authorize the.Chair to sign the Proclamation. <br />
