May 4 'CO 17:~~1 P. O1 4'
Lucy Harbor
352fl Moonlight Drive
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
919-929-852Q
May 4, 2DiDQ
Tura Maon
Oranga Caunry Department of Planning
Fax e644-30Q2
Ms. Moon:
Thank you for speaking with me this afternoon regarding the proposed Nine Gates Subdivision. I
mast likely will not be able to attend the meeting tonigrht sa I thought I'd use this latter to convey
soma of my cancents.
My overwhelming concern is that the proposed development sets a precedent that will
permanently alter the character of the neighborhood in which we live. My busbaad and I Nava
beta living in the Turkey Run subdivision for over 13 years and have grown to appreciate thQ ,
rural and woodsy character of atu surroundings. Excluding the Mel Qaks subdivision (which is art
atramaly), mast of the homes, those along Jones Ferry Road and adjoining naighborhoeds, are ore
large wooded lots. I had presumed that ]coal ordinanceseasuradlprvtected this way of life. Every
day I look forward to kaviag tlm bypass, crossing the lake and cbcckiag out the horses in the
pasture on my trek horrre.
Although the proposed development is set hack from the mad, I'm concerned that future
development of adjoining property will assume the oharacurYStics of the new development From
the developer's description, I envision tinge "Cary-essue" herpes on relatively small lots, cleared
of trees tv molar way for the septic systems necessary to accommodate five bedroom, four bath
hause3 with paved drives.
My other concern is that of the proposed changes W the road. The proposed left•-trtrn lane sounds
as though it might be a hit eticcssiva. I can appreciate the baar+d's interest is ensuring the safety
of rrsideats and passers-by halt I fear that the proposed renovation may be a little ove~xbnilt (along
the scare-ofwiyatoccurted at the Calavaader iriterscctian). There are tttorc dangerous
intersectiaaa along Jones Ferry Road (i.c., tie Damascus Church) that could use the efforts of the
DD'f. I suppaae it all tioils dowq ro the carrying capacity of the road ~Vlrrn is thin capacity
exceeded? And what ate the long-raAge plans for moving cars, trucks and bikes safely?
Perhaps it's time oo look at whcthex the ordinasrces arc ample m protect rho way of life that
attracted my neighbors and I to this part of the county in the first place. I ctirr appreciate that
change is necessary but I think that we should work together to ensure thaz C+range County
remains a desirable place to be.
Respectfully,
Lucy Harter
