C. Department of <br />Environment and Natural Resources and the Orange County Public Works Department for a <br />Solid Waste Reduction Assistance Grant for the Year 2000. <br />BACKGROUND: Annually, the N. C. Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources awards <br />grants to assist local governments and not-for-profit agencies in the expansion, improvement <br />and implementation of waste reduction programs in North Carolina. A total of $1fi1,000 was <br />available in four grant categories: swap shops, backyard composting, education programs and <br />general. Applicants are required to contribute a cash amount equal to 20 percent of the funds <br />requested. <br />In April 2000, the Sanitation Division of the County Public Works Department submitted a grant <br />application in the education category in the amount of $ 5,000. The scope of work included: <br />• fabrication of mobile and stationary signs featuring North Carolina Department of <br />Environment and Natural Resources' theme "Recycling Guys" signs to be mounted on the <br />newest front-end loader collection vehicle and to be displayed as temporary stationary signs <br />at community events . <br />• development of bilingual solid waste/recycling brochures and decals for solid waste <br />convenience centers <br />• conducting waste reduction and recycling education campaigns at school events in Orange <br />County <br />The grant process was very competitive. Twenty-three (23) proposals were submitted for grant <br />funding. Nineteen (19) projects received funding, including the report from Orange County's <br />
