ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 29, 2000
Action Agenda
Item No. g~^
SUBJECT: Contract Renewal Between UNC Hospitals and Orange County for the Senior
Wellness Program
DEPARTMENT: Aging PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Agreement Jerry Passmore ,ext. 2009
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 96$-4501
Durham fi88-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: The purpose of this contract renewal is to receive $47,500 from the University of
North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals for their co-sponsorship of the Department on Aging's Senior
Wellness Program.
BACKGROUND: In 1994, the Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center received funding to
implement a Wellness Program at each of the Orange County Senior Centers and rural
community centers. This three-year project, funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation,
ended June 30, 1997. Due to the success of the Program, UNC Hospitals proposed to fund the
Wellness Coordinator position through contractual agreement with Orange County. This will
maintain existing programs and assisting implementing new programs to promote the health
and well being of seniors in the County. The United Way will also continue to provide operating
expense support for this public/private partnership.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: UNC Hospitals will reimburse Orange County up to $47,500 for the
salary and fringe benefits for the permanent, full-time Senior Public Health Educator who directs
the Wellness Program. Operating expenses for the program are paid for by United Way funds
or class fees.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the
Chair to sign the contract renewal between UNC Hospitals and Orange County for the
continuation of the Wellness Program, subject to final review by staff and the County Attorney.
