ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 6, 2000 .
Action Agen a
Item No. ~~~
SUBJECT: FY 2000 Housin Develo ment Grant A lication
DEPARTMENT: Housing/Community Dev. Department of Commerce announced the availability of Small Cities
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the eight counties, including Qrange County,
receiving TANF Housing Grants late last yeaz. Approximately $250,000 is available for each community.
This funding set-aside by the N.C. Department of Commerce is intended to encourage communities that
received TANF Housing Grants to incorporate CDBG into their local programs.
The Housing Development Program is designed to facilitate the provision of single family
homeownership or multi-family rental projects. Specific activities eligible for funding under this program
include the following:
1. Installation of public infrastructure
2. Removal of hazardous waste
3. Acquisition of vacant land
In past years, the County has received Housing Development funding for infrastructure installation at two
subdivisions sponsored by Habitat for Humanity -Chestnut Qaks and Cain Drive. Currently, Habitat for
Humanity is an active partner in the County's TANF Housing Program by assisting us with increasing the
possibility of homeownership among TANF eligible families. Habitat is currently planning a 41 unit
subdivision in Efland known as Richmond Hills that could be an appropriate project for Housing
Development funding. .
