4~
Orange County
Commission for the Environment
Orange County ERCD
P.O. Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
P)tone: (919) 245-2597
Fax: (919) 644-3002
Email: ccrawford@co.oran~e.nc.us
Memorandum
TO: Orange County Board of Commissioners
Alice Gordon, Chair
From: Kris Price, Chair
Commission for the Environment
Date: November 9, 1999
Re: Comments on the Joint Master Recreation and Parks Work
Group Report
On October 11 and November 8, the Commission for the Environment
considered the report of the Joint Master Recreation and Parks Work
Group.
The Commission is supportive of the findings and recommendations of
the report, and commerkds the Work Group for its diligence and
thoughtful approach to future parks needs. The Commission .concurs
with the Work Group's interest in beginning to land-bank for future
parks. With this in mind, we would share the following comments and
recommendations regarding our future role:
- The Commission for the Environment stands ready and willing to
make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on the
preservation and acquisition of natural areas, wildlife habitat and
riparian buffers -consistent with the charge to the Commission to
advise the Board on matters concerning the environment.
- The Commission would like to have significant representation on the
proposed Parks Council, in regard to the expressed interest in
protecting natural areas and wildlife habitat in a more-
comprehensive parks concept.
